Abstract

BACKGROUND: Previous research has investigated adaptation mechanisms associated with balance training through a single leg stance. Given its potential to improve balance stability to high levels, single leg balance training seems to be an alternative approach to more traditional balance training programs that have used bipedal exercise.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the different effect of resistance exercise using theraband and proprioceptive exercise on leg balance in adolescents.

METHOD: This was an experimental study program physiotherapy, health polytechnics Ministry of Health Surakarta, from May to June 2021. Sample of 64 adolescents aged 19-24 years was selected purposively. The dependent variable was leg balance. The independent variables were resistance exercise and proprioceptive exercise. The data of body balance was measured using excursion balance test. The data were analyzed using independent t test.

RESULT: Mean difference of balance score of the right leg before and after proprioceptive exercise (Mean=17.24; SD= 13.55) was higher than resistance exercise (Mean= 16.68; SD= 13.03) with p= 0.866. Mean difference of balance score of the left leg before and after resistance exercise (Mean=17.30; SD= 10.91) was higher than proprioceptive exercise (Mean= 16.85; SD= 11.20) with p= 0.947.

CONCLUSION : Proprioceptive exercise is better to improve right leg balance than resistance exercise using theraband. Resistance exercise using theraband is better to improve left leg balance than proprioceptive exercise.
