Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Gross Motor Skills in Children at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 12 Jakarta

Abstract

Purpose: Knowing the relationship between body mass index and gross motor skills in children at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 12 Jakarta.

Methods: This type of research is correlational with a cross-sectional approach. Sampling in this study used a purposive sampling technique with a total sample of 85 children. The primary data was obtained by measuring body weight and height which were accumulated with a BMI calculator and the categorized based on the classification of body mass index according to the Ministry of health in 2010, measuring gross motor skills using the gross motor development test-1 and categorized based on the gross motor quotient classification value.

Results: Normality test results were obtained with Kolmogorov Smirnov on body mass index variable (p=0,200) and gross motor skills variable (p=0,000). Correlation test using Spearman (p=0,220; r=-0,135).

Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between body mass index and gross motor skills. The results of data analysis also showed that the higher the body mass index. the lower the gross motor skills.
