Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are clinical syndrome involve respiratory function limitation, chronic and progressive that marked airway inflammation and damage of pulmonary parenchimal. COPD patient experience shortness of breathe and chest expansion limitation that cause air trapping and hyperinflation. Chronic respiratory muscle dysfunction in COPD patient causing decrease lung volume and vital capacity. Diaphragmatic movement reduction is risk factor to increases mortality in COPD patient. The aim of this study was to determine the immediate effect of chest mobilisation in costovertebral joint, diaphragm and pectoralis muscles with total 10 repetitions and 3 sets. Chest expansion is increase but lung volume unchanged. This study is an experimental study pretest and posttest with control group design. The subjects were all patients with COPD outpatient in Physiotherapy Unit at Balai Besar Kesehatan Paru Masyarakat Surakarta that meets the criteria of inclusion.

Data collected were analyzed using SPSS 17.0. The different test within groups measured using Wilcoxon test, and between groups measured using Mann Whitney test. The significance level was set on 0,05. The results are  chest mobilisation increase chest expansion in stable COPD (p = 0,000) but may not benefit on lung volume (p = 0,141).
